2 Parents Appointed by Gov. Jindal to the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council

Governor Bobby Jindal Announces Appointments to the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council
 
BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal announced appointments to the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council.

The Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council is established within the Department of Health and Hospitals to serve as an advocate for persons with developmental disabilities by advising the governor, the secretary of the Department of Health and Hospitals, and the legislature on programs and policies pertaining to services for persons with developmental disabilities and their families.

According to the statute, council is comprised of a maximum of twenty eight gubernatorial appointments. At least sixty percent of the membership of the council must consist of individuals with developmental disabilities, parents or guardians of children with developmental disabilities, or immediate relatives or guardians of adults with mentally impairing developmental disabilities who cannot advocate for themselves. Of this sixty percent of the council, one-third shall be persons with developmental disabilities, one-third shall be parents or guardians of children with developmental disabilities or immediate relatives or guardians of adults with mentally impairing developmental disabilities who cannot advocate for themselves, and one-third shall be a combination of those described above. At least one of these individuals shall be an immediate relative or guardian of an individual with a developmental disability who resides or previously resided in an institution or shall be an individual with a developmental disability who resides or previously resided in an institution. Of the remaining membership of the council, there must be representation of the principal state agencies and representatives of higher education training facilities, local agencies, and nongovernmental agencies and groups concerned with services to persons with developmental disabilities.
 
Appointments to the Developmental Disabilities Council:
 
Patsy White, of Luling, is employed part-time by the St. Charles Parish Public School System. White is a Navy Ombudsman and is an advocate for the families of service men stationed on-board Navy Nuclear Submarines. White will be appointed to serve as the parent of a child with a developmental disability, as required by statute.
 
Terrell “Terry” McFillen, of Lafayette, is the President of People Haulers, Inc. McFillen will be appointed to serve as the parent of an adult with a developmental disability, as required by statute.
