Question:
texted to 870870 WWL Radio  on 6/28/2013
"In light of the state budget cuts, what services and supports does STP have in place to assist children and families with disabilities?"

Answers:
Audio begins at 12:45 and 13:03
-We do have several plans to try to take up the slack from what's been cut from the state.
-The Voters last year were good enough to vote for the extension of our mileage for  public health. Without that we would not be able to do anything, that's where our funding comes from
-Specifics, Call me.  We would be happy to talk about their needs.
-We have many programs that's overlapping.
-Now, in hurricane preparation mode.  Special Needs Evacuation area setup.
-Email STP Pres. Brister at AskPat@stpgov.org, we pull the department in that that question is about and get them the right information.
-or call with specific questions 985-898-2700

Complaint filed against auditor who OK’d Tammany coroner’s books

Mandeville CPA Brent Silva has been performing annual audits of the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office since before Peter Galvan took office in 2000, and while some of the first reviews revealed problems, Silva’s firm gave the agency mostly clean reports in recent years.
Those rosy assessments contrast starkly with a critical audit filed by a new firm — Carr, Riggs & Ingram LLC — hired to look over the books in 2012.

Perspectives of the U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Sec. 4 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965

Sec 4 of the Voting Rights Act is unconstitutional. 5-4. Per CJ Roberts.

Congress could attempt to enact a new list of covered jurisdictions, but it will be exceptionally difficult politically. Major ruling.

From the dissent: The sad irony of today's decision lies in its utter failure to grasp why the VRA has proven effective.

Good news is Section 5 was not struck down wholesale. The key will be 2014 midterms. Need a new Congress for a new formula.

Governor Jindal Signs HB 1 with Line-Item Vetoes, Announces Additional Reductions Based on Preamble of the Budget Bill - Governor Bobby Jindal | State of Louisiana

BATON ROUGE - Today, Governor Bobby Jindal signed HB 1, including line-item vetoes, and announced additional reductions that were authorized and directed in the preamble of the bill.

The Governor’s letter for HB 1 is below:

Jindal signs budget bill, vetoes money for the disabled and the arts

Funding for the disabled and arts programs fell out of the $25 billion state spending plan Friday with the stroke of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s veto pen.
The governor deleted $4 million aimed at whittling down a waiting list for home-based services for the developmentally disabled. Parents of disabled children pleaded with legislators during the session to shorten the list. Some could wait 10 years before receiving services.
In his veto message, Jindal said the reduction in waiting time could not be accommodated because legislators removed too much funding for the routine increase in the number of patients being treated through Medicaid, the government program that pays for health care for the poor.
The Jindal administration contended the Legislature underfunded the state’s health department by more than $20 million.

Louisiana students will receive aid to attend Arkansas schools

The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved plans for up to 100 students in northwest Louisiana to attend school in Arkansas with the state aid routed through a charter school in northeast Louisiana.
Aid for the students could total up to $700,000.
Students will take LEAP and other tests and the results will count on Delhi Charter School’s annual school performance score, officials said.
Neither BESE President Chas Roemer nor Claiborne Parish Superintendent Janice Williams returned calls for comment on Friday.
