In a Democracy Now! special, we look back at a decade of stories from the oral history project StoryCorps. The first StoryCorps recording booth opened in 2003 in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. Some 100,000 people have since recorded interviews with their loved ones in StoryCorps booths across the country. Their voices are recorded onto a CD for the storytellers and preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. We spend the hour with StoryCorps founder Dave Isay and play some of his favorite stories from the past decade, including many we’ve never aired before. We hear about Yelitza Castro, a housekeeper who cooks dinner for homeless people, and Ronald McNair, an African-American astronaut who died in the 1986 Challenger explosion. When he was nine years old, McNair refused to leave a racially segregated library, even after the librarian threatened to call the police.

American gets 1-year prison sentence for parody video
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (CNN) -- Shezanne Cassim, the American jailed in the United Arab Emirates after posting a video parody, was sentenced Monday to one year in prison and a fine of 10,000 UAE dirhams (approximately $2,700).

The young American living in the UAE has been imprisoned since April, his family says, for posting what was intended to be a funny video on the Internet.
He was accused of defaming the UAE's image abroad, according to The National, the country's main English-language newspaper.
The video in question is a 19-minute short that pokes fun at a clique of Dubai teens who are influenced by hip-hop culture. In the 1990s, the label "Satwa G" was coined for a group of suburban teens who were known to talk tougher than they really were.
The video depicts a look at a "combat school" in the suburb of Satwa, where these "gangsters" are trained. The training includes how to throw sandals at targets, using clothing accessories as whips, and how to call on the phone for backup.

SNAFU TRANSCRIPT: folks were online yesterday from 9:30 eastern to around noon. they couldn't believe their eyes. this wasn't just on delta.com, it was on priceline. they saw prices that are actually cheaper than the taxes you usually pay on a ticket. here's an example. flying from jfk to puerto rico, usually $308, somebody snagged a ticket to $77. jfk to vegas, purchased for $81. and amy chee was online looking to go from indianapolis to honolulu. she saw the price of $70 and was like what? she decided for whatever reason to click over to the first class ticket and saw it for $88. needless to say she booked those tickets as fast as she could. the round tr-- usually costs $3,396. she said she feels like she committed grand larceny.

His solution? Projecting 3D images onto sheets of mist, giving the illusion of a hologram:
An airstream is created from tiny water drops, similar to the ones in the clouds.

According to Displair the image is created inside a layer of "dry fog which is composed of ultra-fine water droplets."
3-dimensional projections are created using infrared sensors.
The screen responds "intuitively" to hand movements -- 1500 of them -- many of which are similar to those used on our mobile devices, such as pinch-and-zoom.
The screen's inventors think that Displair screens could be used in medicine, and offer a more hygienic alternative to touchscreens.
In the future the team hope to explore scent, to offer users a multi-sensory experience.

Editorial: Target theft proves need for chip cards
’Tis the season of good will toward all, family meals and traditions, and shopping.
Unfortunately, ’tis also the season of sophisticated criminal rip-offs, like the massive data breach at all 1,797 Target stores in the United States, affecting 40 million credit card users between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.
The rest of the world has migrated to more secure embedded microchip-based cards. The United States should, too.
Europe, Asia, Latin America and our neighbors, Canada and Mexico, already have adopted chip cards. They are the international standard for payment cards. More than 1.5 billion chip cards have been issued globally and more than three-quarters of payment terminals outside the United States accept chip cards.
The United States has been a laggard, sticking with the magnetic stripe technology of the 1960s.
Why?
France and Germany have been using chip cards since the 1990s.
The United States, in contrast, has “let the payments industry decide what to do,” according to a 2011 report by First Data Corp., a global credit and debit card payments processor based in Atlanta.
The total cost of implementation – replacing cards and readers in the United States – has been estimated to be about $8 billion. Compare that with the annual cost of credit card fraud of $8.6 billion.

On Tuesday, conservative news outlets in the United States decided that the best way to commemorate the life of Nelson Mandela, and to report on the memorial services in his honor, was to manufacture a controversy about an AFP photo of President Barack Obama shooting a selfie with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. According to Fox News, the “international incident” was so bad that, “The tsk-tisk-ing could be heard across continents.”
Liberal news outlets countered with a photograph from former President George W. Bush’s Instagram feed, taken at the same memorial, in which he’s seen posing with pop star Bono.
Two things were lost amid the nonsensical partisan wrangling. First, the furor shamefully overshadowed the memorial service itself, and the heartfelt messages that were delivered by Mandela’s family and colleagues. Second, such outcries overlook the close quarters in which our Democratic and Republican politicians actually live and work.
